The Huddersfield Probus Club was the first such club in the Huddersfield area, formed back in 1973 as a progression of the Rotary movement. Retirement can come too early for many people who want and are able to remain active. Probus clubs are organisations for people who are retired, semi-retired or are nearing retirement from their profession or business and want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Our Club is run autonomously, with an absolute minimum of formality and our current members come from a wide range of professional and business backgrounds.
The main objectives of our Club are to promote friendship, provide entertainment and generate interest in topics you might not have thought about and at present we have a number of vacancies. We produce a programme of activities for the year where the subjects covered are informative, educational and/or entertaining. The list of speakers for this year is shown on the Programme page.
‘Hello from the current President’ – My name is John, welcome; I’m delighted that you are showing interest in our Probus Club by visiting our website. We are a collection of retired professionals and businessmen who meet twice a month to enjoy each other’s company, interesting talks given by a variety of speakers and sometimes a swift half (not compulsory). The best endorsement of who we are I can offer is to repeat a comment from a recently joined member, “they’re a friendly bunch.” I do hope that you like what you see and wish to find out more about us; we hope to hear from you soon.
When We Meet
Our regular meetings are at Huddersfield Golf Club in Fixby on the first and third Tuesday mornings of every month, except August when we do not have any meetings.
Each meeting starts with tea or coffee between 10 o’clock and 10.30 followed by a brief information session from the committee members and then a talk by a visiting speaker. The talks usually last about an hour or slightly less and cover a wide range of interests – one of our most recent was a talk from a local MP.

In addition, we organise three lunches through the year to which our wives and friends are invited – these are currently held at Outlane Golf Club. We also have an ‘Annual Dinner’ in October – this is an evening meeting also currently held at Outlane Golf Club.
In addition, a variety of excursions and social events are offered during the year.
Does this appeal to you? We welcome guests and if you would like to give us a try, just turn up at one of our meetings and you will be made most welcome. Alternatively, use our Contact page to make an approach and we will get back to you.
For any further information or for details of how to become a member please contact our Secretary Steve Sykes direct on the Officials page or via (info@huddersfieldprobusclub.org.uk).
