Past Events

These are some of the previous events we have held.

Silent Auction – September 2025

A very successful Silent Auction was held on 26th September at St John’s Church, Lepton. Around 100 items to auction were donated by members, which, after a fun evening, including table quizzes and a pie & pea supper, raised £314 for club funds. Almost 50 people, including family and friends, attended a very sociable evening. Many thanks to everybody who participated and helped to make the evening a success

Annual Bowling – July 2025

July 30th saw the annual bowling tournament take place again at Farnley Tyas bowling club and we were again lucky that the weather was kind to us. Members brought their own picnics and witnessed some great bowling – the winners were Gordon Smith & Sandy Guthrie. Trophy winners, please remember to return your trophy before next years competition!

Trip to Carlisle by train – May 2025

A first hand report from one of our members :-

A lovely day dawned on Friday, May 2nd.  Probus members turned up and were checked in by Gerry, our organiser, at Halifax rail station.  His daughter Catherine ( to whom we are really grateful ) gave us all the details for the day.  The train was on time and departed at 8:30 am. Destination …  Carlisle !

We changed trains at Leeds, and we settled down to view the wonderful Yorkshire scenery, highlighted by the sunshine and blue sky.   Conversation was flowing freely. Obvious that a good time was being had by all!   Refreshments were served as we passed through rural hamlets and fields occupied by new born lambs. The train slowed down even further, as we passed over the Ribblehead viaduct.

We arrived at Carlisle station at noon.  Meeting point for the return journey was outside W H Smith’s.  Everyone found their own choice of lunch venue -The Cathedral cafe was a good choice, sitting outside in the sunshine.  A nice browse around, then back to the station, in good time for our train.

Carlisle Cathedral

Arrived back in Halifax around 7pm. The sun still shining !   An excellent day, enjoyed by all.  Grateful thanks to Gerry and Catherine.

Marsden Madness! – June 2024

Our Marsden Madness day included a train trip to Marsden, a barge trip into the Canal tunnel and drinks at the Railway. Our picture shows two of the eight members who journeyed to Marsden on the train  and then took the water shuttle  to Tunnel End at Standedge  – the the highest canal tunnel in the UK  that journeys through the Pennines  between Yorkshire and Lancashire.

We then entered a special protective barge that took us deep into the 3.5 miles long tunnel where we could admire the phenomenal Victorian engineering . On our return it was time for lunch and a few beers in the Railway pub garden as the weather was very warm and sunny .We had yet another great day out with our Probus Club.

Trip to Leeds Armouries – January 2024

January 12th saw 9 members visit the Leeds Armouries. We took the train, followed by a water taxi to the museum. It was a wonderful combination of fixed exhibits and live displays that were very informative and engaging. There was so much to see and do that we probably need to go back again at some time in the future.

Trip to Chester by Rail – November 2023

November 30th saw members and their wives and partners take a free rail trip to Chester from Halifax station. Another great day out and we offer our gratitude to the Northern Rail Community Partnership who made this happen for us.

Annual Bowling – August 2023

August 16th saw the annual bowling tournament take place again at Farnley Tyas bowling club and we were lucky that the weather was kind to us. Members brought their own picnics and witnessed some great bowling – the Club’s President and Vice President taking the trophies home with them. Trophy winners, please remember to return your trophy before next years competition!

Trip to York by Rail – August 2023

Halifax Town Hall – July 2023

Members had a fascinating tour of Halifax Town Hall, steeped in history and funny stories.

Magic Rock Brewery – May 2023

A trip to the Magic Rock Brewery for beer and food sampling.

Probus Silent Auction – May 2022

Our first post Covid social event – and what a success it turned out to be! Held at St Francis Church Hall, over 60 attendees had a great evening out with family and friends. We enjoyed the supper, the quiz and of course, the silent auction itself. We had a record number of contributions, most of which attracted a bid, resulting in a welcome boost to the Club’s funds. Many thanks to everybody who participated and helped to make the evening a success.

An evening with Gary Don – Nov 2019

In November, our social event was an evening with Gary Don, the antiques Expert. Members were invited to bring along a selection of their ‘valuables’ and ‘heirlooms’ for a quick valuation. Suffice it to say that a few members were a little disappointed with the outcome! Before the valuation, Gary gave us an insight to the life of an auctioneer. A Sop Supper was enjoyed by all.

Skipton Canal Trip – July 2019

Another successful day out for the club, helped by the glorious weather

Annual Bowling Competition – Aug 2019

We held our 4th annual bowling day at Farnley Tyas Bowling Club in August. We had another great day out and, thankfully, the weather was very kind to us after the washout 2 years ago. Trophy winners, please remember to return your trophy before next years competion!

Visit to The Black Sheep Brewery – Sep 2018

We had an enjoyable trip out to the Black Sheep brewery in Masham. Not only did we get a tour of the brewery, we managed a few drinks along the way.
